Supplements are JUST supplements
Protein powder, vitamins, iron pills, fish oil pills… are just some examples of things we are always asked about. Did you know that everything you’re looking for is already in the food we eat? Eating a variety of fruits + vegetables, carbs, proteins, and fats will keep you on the right track! You can always increase certain portions depending on your lifestyle and goals. However, most of the time- you want to keep a balance.
Supplements are just that- supplements. Don’t even worry about these until you’ve nailed nutrition. While they’re awesome for an extra boost, try to rely on whole foods before you introduce supplements to your diet, and always consult with your doctor!
Whole foods are foods that have gone through no to little processing, and are as close to their natural state as possible. We like to think of it in the apple pie example. An apple raw has much higher nutritional value than an apple pie, which has additives such as sugars, and has gone through different processes to reach the final products. Supplements are not a quick fix or a substitute for real food, so if you’ve never had them before, and you can improve your eating habits- definitely start there!
Once you’ve checked those boxes, consult with your doctor/nutritionist/dietician to see which supplements could be best for you.
Some people never need them, while others go through periods of needing these boosts. Pregnant women, vegans, bodybuilders, etc.- are all great candidates for some supplements such as Vitamin B12, Folic acid supplements, or protein powders.
