Small Group Training in the East Bay
Small group training is the middle path between a personal trainer and a packed group class: a handful of people, one coach who knows everyone, and programming you don't have to think about. At IBX Fitness in Albany, that means 50-minute strength classes capped at 14 people, coached start to finish, with every movement modifiable. Members come from Albany, Berkeley, El Cerrito, Kensington, Richmond, and Emeryville, and the free 1-week trial covers anyone within 5 miles of the studio.
Why the size of the class is the whole point
A class of 30 is a performance. The person at the front can't see your form, so you're really working out alone in a crowd. A personal trainer solves that but costs like it. Fourteen is the number where a coach can still see every rep in the room, and that changes what a class can do for you.
At IBX, the coach sets your weights, corrects your form mid-set, remembers your bad ankle from three weeks ago, and tells you when you're sandbagging. You also get something a trainer can't sell you: twelve other people who know your name and notice when you show up. That combination is why members who quit every other gym stick here. It's like having a personal trainer in a group class, which is a sentence we stole from a member review because we couldn't say it better.
Strength first, and on purpose
Plenty of small group programs in the East Bay are cardio with weights sprinkled in. Ours runs the other direction: two parts strength, one part cardio, every class. Strength is what fixes back pain, protects bone density, carries the groceries, and gets you up the hills. Cardio matters, and it's in every class, but it's the seasoning, not the meal.
We train with Torpedo weights: one tool that plays the roles of dumbbell, kettlebell, and barbell. The week rotates Interval, Burn, and Xplosive themes, and all classes are Full-Body. And our Iron Flow classes chain weighted movements into continuous sequences at lighter loads, which keeps your heart rate up while you build strength. There's no CrossFit-style competition and no leaderboard. The only person you're measured against trained here last month.
The studio sits on San Pablo Ave in Albany, which turns out to be a very convenient place to be from five directions at once. We've written an honest page for each area, with real drive times, parking, and answers:
Coming from Emeryville? You're about 15 minutes up San Pablo or Hollis, and depending on your address, you're likely inside the free-week radius. Book the free call, and we'll check your address against the radius on the spot.

Questions people ask us about small group training
What's the difference between small group training and a group fitness class?
Size and attention. A group fitness class is one-to-many: follow along and hope your form holds. Small group training keeps the group small enough that the coach works with each person individually. At IBX, the cap is 14, and the coach adjusts weights and movements per person every class.
How does the cost compare to personal training?
Personal training in the East Bay commonly runs $100 or more per session. IBX memberships work out to a fraction of that per class, with current rates listed plainly on our pricing page. You get most of the attention at a fraction of the price; the trade is sharing your coach with up to 13 neighbors.
Is it like that one gym that rhymes with FrossKit?
No. No barbells, no competition, no whiteboard times. We borrow what works from serious strength training and leave the intimidation out. If “FrossKit” burned you out or scared you off, you're in good company here.
I'm out of shape. Should I get fit first and then join?
Please don't. "Get fit first" is how people stay stuck for years. Classes scale to wherever you are today, and your coach handles the how. Showing up out of shape is literally what the studio is for.
