Strength Training Classes Near Kensington
IBX Fitness is (probably) the best option for strength training if you live in Kensington: a small group strength studio at 727 San Pablo Ave in Albany, about 5-10 minutes down Colusa or the Arlington from most of Kensington. Classes are 50 minutes, coached, and capped at 14 people. The free 1-week trial covers all of Kensington.
Here's our honest pitch, and it matters more the longer you've lived: muscle is the thing your future self will thank you for. Strength training protects bone density, balance, joint health, and your ability to keep doing what you love, whether that's gardening, grandkids, or hiking in the regional parks. The research on this is not subtle, especially for women through and after menopause.
Plenty of our members are in their 50s, 60s, and 70s. One is 76 and jokes that he's just glad to be there. Another told us at 64 she'd never felt more structurally sound. They train in the same classes as the 35-year-olds, because every movement scales. Same class, different weights, same coach watching your form.
If you've never lifted, that's normal here. If your doctor said "you should do some resistance training" and you've been quietly ignoring it, this is the low-drama way to start.
Strength for the years you'll actually use it
Fifty minutes, strength first, a short cardio finish. You get your own space with your own equipment, so there's no wandering or waiting. We lift with Torpedo weights rather than barbells: easier on your wrists and back to handle, and they scale from very light to heavy enough to keep anyone honest.
Modification isn't a side service, it's the coaching itself. Arthritic shoulder, knee replacement, sciatica, balance concerns: your coach adjusts the movement so you work hard safely. You'll never be told to push through pain, and nobody's yelling. It's challenging but not overwhelming, and members say that's exactly why they keep coming.

Questions Kensington folks ask us
I'm in my 60s and haven't lifted weights. Is this really for me?
While we have members in their 60s and 70s who train with us every week, we do want to make sure that we’ll be a good fit for you based on your exercise background and any current injuries/health conditions. We’ll start with a 10-minute call to confirm we’re a good fit for you, and if so then you can come try us out! Your coach sets your weights, watches every rep, and adjusts anything that doesn't suit your body. Start light. Progress comes faster than you'd expect.
How long does it take to get to IBX from Kensington?
About 10 minutes by car: down Colusa through the Circle, or down Arlington, then a few blocks on San Pablo. Free street parking when you arrive, and no hill to climb back to your car.
Is it a bootcamp? Will someone yell at me?
No and no. It's coached strength training with a plan, not a punishment. The energy is warm and the music is good. You'll work hard because the structure works, not because someone's shouting.
Does the free trial week cover Kensington?
Yes. The trial covers anyone within 5 miles of the studio, and Kensington is comfortably inside that.
