Will lifting weights make me bulky? No, and here’s why..
Many fear picking up a weight and only stick to cardio because there is a false stigma around “being bulky” and lifting weights. This could be due to seeing misrepresentation in the media (body builder commercials showing contestants lifting weight) and having the viewer think that if they were to train the same way, they would appear that way as well. There’s also a huge misconception that only cardio will lead to effective weight loss.
Research shows that weight lifting or strength training is actually a necessary part of physical activity, especially as we progress in age. Not only is it linked to reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety, but also lowers blood pressure, and helps prevent osteoporosis and arthritis.
That “bulky” look that steers people away is only achievable through years of consistent intense training, a large caloric surplus, and genetics. Simply lifting 2-3x a week will strengthen and tone, not add instant bulk.
Instead of getting “bulky” you are more likely to experience: increased muscle density & definition, improved metabolism, better posture & bone density, and a “toned” appearance.
